The Meanwood Valley in the 19th century was an industrial area, with several mills powered by the Meanwood Beck. Meanwood Grove was the site of a tannery from 1814 to 1926 and some remains of it can still be found in the undergrowth. Since this photo was taken, in January 2023, the pond has been tidied up and fenced off to make it a haven for wildlife.
